The Feed

The feed is not built to inform you. It is built to keep you, because the longer it keeps you, the more it earns.
WHO PAYS THE BILL

The app on your phone is free. That feels like a gift. It is not. A business that costs billions to run does not give itself away for nothing.

Someone is paying. It is just not you, not in cash. The advertisers pay, and what they buy is access to your eyes. You are the goods on the shelf.

THE ONE INSTRUCTION

The machine that picks your feed is given a single goal. Maximize the time you spend looking. That is the whole instruction.

It does not understand politics or truth or your mood. It measures one thing. Did you stay, or did you leave. Everything it does flows from that.

WHY ANGER WINS

So the machine runs an endless test on you. It shows you many things and watches what holds you. Calm and balanced posts let you put the phone down.

Outrage does not. Fear does not. A thing that makes you angry pulls you in to argue, to check, to scroll. The machine cannot feel any of this. It just counts the minutes, and the angry minutes win.

NOBODY ORDERED IT

This is the part that unsettles people. No engineer sat down and decided to make the world angrier. There is no villain in a chair pulling levers.

The machine was told to keep you watching, and it discovered, on its own, that upset works. The dysfunction was not designed. It was found, by a system blindly chasing a single number.

THE INVENTORY

Now flip the picture. You always assumed you were the customer being served. You are not. You are the inventory being counted and sold.

Your attention is the product. Your anger is the version of that product that sells best. The moment you see this, the feed loses a little of its grip, because you can finally see the gate it is pulling you through.

You are not the customer. You are the inventory.
